Will and I were in the car once, about to merge on Will and I were in the car once, about to merge onto 495 when traffic in front of us came to a stop on the ramp.

Will looked over and noticed the yield sign and said “Mom, does that mean stop?”

When I explained he was perplexed by why the car ahead of us had stopped.

I told him that it can be scary to have to merge into this fast lane of traffic and sometimes it feels safer to stop.

“I can understand that,” he said. “But then how do you know when to go?”

How do we know when it is time to go? How can we tell if it is time to assert ourselves or to hang back?

We know when it’s time to go because we practice.

This conversation reminded me of Donna Farhi’s Seven Principles of Moving, the second of which is:

Yield to the Earth to find levity.

The idea that we need to yield to the Earth seems counterintuitive, right?

When my idea of yielding is more like to capitulate or relent or quit, I feel heavy.

Instead, yielding can be...

Paying attention.
Permitting.
Allowing.

Like standing strong but soft in warrior II.

It doesn’t feel like sinking or giving up.

It doesn’t feel like fear.

And it definitely doesn’t feel like uncertainty.

When we pay attention, permit, and allow, we know when it’s time to take action or not.

But you know what?

It is not easy. It takes tons of practice.

Just like driving a car down the on ramp to merge into traffic on 495 takes practice.

I’m teaching at 9 am ET on Saturday, as usual. Hope I'll see you on the mat and out in the world where we can all practice the art of yielding together.

Prioritizing the process and the experience in yog Prioritizing the process and the experience in yoga instead of prioritizing the poses doesn't necessarily mean that we avoid challenges to our capacity.

Sometimes the process requires that we run smack up against our edges while we work in the direction of certain poses.

You all know how much I sing the praises of Restorative Yoga but there's value in exploring more active and complicated postures like this one: #baddhaparsvakonasana

I'll always give you clear and precise directions on exactly HOW to go in the direction of poses like this but I'll also ask you to consider:

What happens to the breath when you are bound up?

Are there moments of expansion and freedom despite - or because of! - the restrictions you feel?

Where do you work with your strength and challenge your stamina and where do you need to let go?

If you are excited about exploring more active poses in this way like #boundsideanglepose check out my on-demand video subscription.

A class on this pose and a (mostly) hands-free crow pose class are the latest additions.

You'll find 10 or so active classes per week with content changing each week so there's always a great mix of your favorites and something new to explore without making you feel overwhelmed by too many choices.

Subscribe for just $11 per week and cancel at any time.

Check the link in my bio for more details.
